Random thoughts on prayer:
Sometimes when a person disagrees with, disapproves of, or otherwise is at odds with another person he/she says, “I’ll pray for you.” What is the prayer? “God, please change/punish/correct/bring around to my way of thinking this person?” “God, help me to live in loving relationship with this person?” “God, open my heart and mind to be more accepting of this person and (whatever it is that separates us)?” Is it something else?
There is an African proverb that simply says, “When you pray, move your feet.”
God can do whatever God chooses to do, whenever, however, why ever, wherever God chooses to do it.
Prayer is a way to establish, develop, and maintain a living relationship with a Living God.
There is more to prayer than simply forming words. Prayer involves listening, as well.
God is not Santa Claus.
Prayer is the most under-utilized resource available to people of faith.
The way we live our lives is a form of prayer, revealing what we think of God.
I knew a church elder who always addressed his public prayers to “God in heaven, wherever that may be…”
Meditation and prayer involve seeking God’s presence and holding a person or situation in that presence, perhaps repeating a word or phrase such as “send your spirit,” or “your will be done.”
Today is the so-called National Day of Prayer, and participants approach it with various expectations and agendas. Generally speaking, evangelical Christians have been in control of the observance, so it obviously has its limits.
An interesting article, though, written by purported evangelicals, can be found here.
